Hello, welcome back. By now we have studied different aspects of bio-active compounds. Cereals and vegetables as a functional compounds. Their role and their significance, different health benefits and many other things. Now in this lecture we will discuss about the different market availability of the nutraceuticals and functional foods. Have you visited the market to buy some kind of functional foods or nutraceuticals. Do you know which type of products are available in the market? Now let’s have a look. Some examples of the functional foods. Like oats. Everybody is aware of the nutritional significance of oats, which contain beta-glucan and omega-3 enriched eggs. Both are good for the heart health. Then fermentation with a specific kind of bacteria, that is the grass bacteria. We can say it is recommended and say, that is lacto-bacillus species to have the bio-active peptides. And they improve the cholesterol levels.
One other example is chewing gums. That they will be replaced sugar with the xylitol. And it will prevent the dental caries. Then golden rice and orange fleshed sweet potato with the pro-vitamin A, that is good for the vision. Nutraceuticals that are available in the market. This is the brand name. And this is the particular component present, which is responsible for targeting the health benefit or targeting to prevent the disease. And what is the function of this component. The brand name is betatene, and it contains carotenoids. Carotenoids, they are antioxidant, you are aware about that. And it will improve the immune function. Similarly one more product is there, Xangold. These are the brand names. I am telling the brand names. When you are searching in the market, you should be aware about the brand names.
And what is the particular component? If we have knowledge of the particular component. What it contains actually, only then we can come to its function. Like it contains Lutein esters. And it is good for eye health. Lipoec, it contains alpha-lipoec acid. And it is a very potent antioxidant. Then Generol, it contains phytosterol. And it helps in prevention of coronary heart diseases. It will reduce the coronary heart diseases. Then the another brand, that is a popular one. The Premium probiotics. And the component are probiotics. Till now you have come about, know about the probiotics. What they are? How they are useful to us? And they improve our immune system. And intestinal disorder because they make the nutrients unavailable to the pathogens. Pathogens are the disease causing micro-organisms. And probiotics are the live microbes that confer the health benefits. In the simple language we are calling them the good bacteria.
Then another important product that is available in the market is Soylife. And it has the soya bean phytoestrogen. And this is good for the bone health. So we should be aware about the brand and the particular component present in that. And that component is targeting which function. Are the nutraceuticals that are available in the market. Similarly lots of nutraceuticals are available in the market with the functional component. This is a functional component. And this is a function of that particular component. The brand name is Z-trim and the component is wheat. It is a zero calorie fat replacer. Then Linumlife, it contains lignin extract from flax and it is beneficial in prostrate health. Fenulife, that is it contains the fenugreek, in normal language we call it methi and it controls the blood sugar. So these products are, these products in the form of nutraceuticals, they are available in the market. Next is Teamax. It is a green tea extract. And it is a potent antioxidant, which helpful in the scavenging of the free radical.
Then Marinol. It contains DHA and EPA. Omega-3 fatty acids, and it is good for the heart health protection. Then Clarinol. The active compound here is CLA. It is conjugated linoleic acid. And it is useful to maintain the weight loss of the ingredients. Then Cholestaid. The active component or the bio-active component is Saponin. Saponin you are aware that it can reduce the cholesterol. So now after discussing all these things, you are aware of the functionals and nutraceuticals that are available in the market. Whenever you visit the market or any place for buying of these products. You should be aware with the health benefits and its active components. That are the main importance. Now we have discussed the market availability also, the benefits also. How they are useful? How they can prevent the disease? How they promote the health?
Now there are some constraints also regarding the consumers. The consumers like they have some kind of hesitation in buying of these products. And with this hesitation there are other factors also, which plays; like, act as a constraint in buying these products. What are these constraints. Let’s have a look. First is the low income of the huge population. If we talk about our country. If we’ll talk about India that the income group matters a lot. The low income people, they have the conception that these products are very costly and they are not able to afford them. And huge population suffer with this type of misconception. Then second factor is existence of the unscrupulous manufacturers. Means the manufacturers, they are not valid. And another constraint or another factor is the testing infrastructure. Means whatever products are manufactured by any company. They are lacking in the. There are no infrastructure for testing them. And also to validate the manufacturer’s claims. Means the manufacturer if that company or manufacturer is claiming that sugar free. It is a claim. So there should be some authority that can validate that really it is free from sugar or it is a sugar replacer.
Then the important other aspect. It is the physical infrastructure that is also a major constraint in the manufacturing of the functional foods. Then another regulatory framework for functional foods. Now, these days FSSAI is a very regulatory body, who is looking after these functional foods and nutraceuticals. And I think all kind of products FSSAI is looking for. And another more important factor is, resistance to the genetically modified foods. Earlier also I have discussed that we have a mindset that genetically modified foods are not good. And we till date we have not accepted them. So people’s are then, they are like very conscious and very resistance they have for the purchasing or adoption of genetically modified foods.
So this is all about the market availability of the products. And the different factors which affect the buying capability or buying capacity of the consumers, and the health benefits. Which brands are available. And while purchasing any kind of nutraceuticals or function food, how we can go through the health claim, and other aspects.
Thank You.
